Ireland’s Elite boxers hit the ground running with three wins from three in Finland today.
St Michael’s Athy team-mates John Joe Joyce and David Oliver Joyce and Michael Nevin recorded three wins out-of-three for Ireland at the 19-nation Tammer Elite multi-nations in Finland today.
Joyce, nicknamed Triple J, got the hat-trick underway with a 17-10 win over England’s Anthony Fowler, and Nevin, who was making his Elite debut for Ireland,recorded an impressive 18-8 victory over Scotland’s Joe Ham.
David Oliver completed a fine opening for Ireland with a 19-7 victory over Richard Needham of Wales in Tampere.
“John Joe, David Oliver and Michael boxed very well today and all three recorded fine victories to get us off to a winning start,” said Irish Team Manager Eanna Green.
Ken Egan, Conrad Cummings and Ross Hickey and John Joe Joyce will be in action tomorrow.
Con Sheehan received a bye into the semi-finals and will meet a Russian opponent in the super-heavyweight class.
Willie McLaughlin picked up an injury and did not travel to Finland.
