NATIONAL SCHOOLBOY COMPETITION SEMI-FINALS

by Bernard O'Neill on Saturday, August 18th, 2012

Twenty five semi-finals were decided at the Special Schoolboy Competition at IABA HQ this afternoon.

Ryan Lavery earned one of the most convincing decisions of today’s Special Schoolboy Competition semi-finals at Dublin’s National Stadium. The St John Bosco BC stand out progressed to next Friday’s deciders courtesy of a 10-1 verdict.

Conor Quinn was also in top form, while Sean Purcell emerged from an entertaining three-rounder with John Maughan.

Oliver McCarthy, Jason Sweeney, Michael Nevin, Francie Stokes, Conor Quinn and James Clarke also impressed today. Darragh Murray and Kevin Kehoe were involved in the closest contest of the afternoon, Murray edging the 65kg duel 7-6.

The weigh-in for next Friday’s finals will be held between 8.30am and 9.30am and 12pm and 1pm at the National Stadium. Boxing begins at 7pm on Friday evening.

The IABA are using the Special Schoolboy Competition to help with their selection process for the 10th European Schoolboy Championships in Russia.

The Continental deciders glove off in Anapa on October 1st.

Ireland has won 40 medals at this level since the inaugural European Schoolboy Championships in Rome in 2003.

Podium-topper David Joyce, Carl Frampton, Keith Boyle, John McDonagh, David Oliver Joyce and John Joe Joyce took home one gold, one silver and four bronze medals from the Eternal City nine years ago.
