Ken Egan will be looking for a good “fin-ish” at the business end of the Elite Tammer Multi-Nations in Tampere, Finland over the weekend.
The 2008 Olympic silver medalist beat England’s Lawrence Osueke in the quarter-finals tonight to book his ticket into the semi-finals where he’ll meet Finland’s Niklas Räsänen.
And if the Neilstown BC southpaw wins that last-four duel he’ll also meet a Finnish opponent in Sunday’s light-heavyweight final as two Finns clash in the corresponding semi-final.
Meanwhile, Conrad Cummings was 9-2 up and motoring when his contest with Sweden’s Ibragim Israelov was stopped in the Belfast middleweight’s favour in the second, and Ross Hickey cruised to a landslide 29-10 decision over Italy’s Lova Melis in the light-welterweight class.
Beijing Olympian John Joe Joyce and his St Michael’s Athy team-mate and cousin David Oliver Joyce scored 42 points between them against Poland at welter and lightweight.
John Joe beat Roman Szymanski 21-10 and David Oliver followed that up with a 21-13 decision over Dawid Michelus.
Michael Nevin, appearing in his second Elite international, was 5-1 up after the first against experienced Hungarian Krisztian Nagy, but received two public warnings in the second – Nagy got one -and the Hungarian over turned the first frame deficit to lead 15-12 going into the third en route to victory.
Six Irish boxers will be in action in Saturday’s semi-finals.
