John Joe Nevin turned on the style to help Paris United come from behind and secure a 4-1 win over Ken Egan’s and Con Sheehan’s Leipzig Leopards in Paris tonight.
The Irish 2012 Olympian cruised to a unanimous (50-45,50-45,50-45) decision over Rashid Kassem at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in the French capital.
The win was Nevin’s second victory this season over the Danish fighter, and ensures that United, who claimed the inaugural WSB Team Championships last term, qualify for the WSB quarter-finals play-offs from Group B.
However, following tonight’s defeat, the Leopard’s destiny is no longer in their own hands and they are looking nervously over their shoulders at David Oliver Joyce’s Istanbul Bosphorus.
Joyce’s side meet the Beijing Dragons – who are rooted to the bottom of the table - on Wednesday night and if they win they will leapfrog the Leopards into fourth spot in Group B, a finish which will guarantee that the Turkish outfit make the play-off’s at the expense of the German side.
Neither Ken Egan, who has a hand injury, or Irish Elite super-heavyweight champion Con Sheehan were in action for the Leopards last night.
Willie McLaughlin’s Milano Thunder qualified for the play-offs in Group A along with Patrick Gallagher’s Mumbai Fighters.
But Jason Quigley’s and Sean Turner’s Los Angeles Matadors are out following their 3-2 loss to the Bangkok Elephants.
Tyrone’s Michael Gallagher, who claimed the 2011 AIBA World referee and judge (R&) award, was working as an R&J at tonight’s United versus Leopards match.
Two-time Irish Olympian Nevin was the only Irish boxer in action in the WSB tonight.
