NATIONAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2012 National Youth Championships gloved off at the National Stadium in Dublin this evening.

Hughie Joyce, Kurt Walker, Jamie Lonergan, Scott Hanway and Bernie McDonagh, with an inside the distance win over Liam O’Connor, recorded the first four victories of tonight’s National Youth Championships preliminaries

Joyce, St Michael’s Athy, was in against Mulhuddart BC prospect Dylan Tang and emerged with a five-point margin of victory from a high-scoring flyweight clash.

Patrick Bradley, Christopher Nevin, Dean Walsh, Rory Lavery, Hugh Nevin, David Roche and Ronan Craig also took the early route to victory this evening, while Ian Byrne impressed versus Darren McCole.

Dylan Carr and Sean Flynn were involved in a 50-point thriller, Carr emerging with a 34-16 decision. Elsewhere at the home of Irish boxing, Paddy Nevin and Stephen Webb also claimed victories.

Keane McMahon brought the curtain down on tonight’s proceedings with a 19-6 decision over Owen Scully.

The Youth Championships resume at 11am tomorrow at the National Stadium.

Meantime, Cork celebrated a McCarthy double with two wins from the remaining three National Cadet Championships finals.

Mayfield’s Thomas McCarthy and Brian Dillons’ Oliver McCarthy registered 11-6 and 5-2 wins over Dominic Bradley and Ryan Lavery.

Thomas Stokes also finished on top of the podium following his 8-4 win over Shane Flavin.
