Twenty eight semi-finals were decided at the National Junior Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.
Twenty eight preliminary and quarter-finals bouts were decided at the opening session of the 2012 National Junior Cadet Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium tonight.
Dominic Bradley got proceedings underway with a 13-6 decision over Conor McMullan this evening. Terry McEntee also emerged victorious in the 33kg category.
St Francis BC ace Roger O’Donoghue had his hand raised in victory at the expense of Adam Kavanagh in the first quarter-final of the session. The conclusion of a fine contest saw the Limerick prospect emerge with a 9-7 decision.
O’Donoghue was joined in the 39kg semi-finals by Conor Quinn, Calvin Turner and Francie Stokes, who impressed versus Matthew McDonagh.
Other to impress this evening were Thomas McGuinn, Thomas Power, James McGivern, Niall Carroll and Oliver McCarthy.
Peter McCarton and Michael McDonagh were involved in one of the closest contest of the night, McDonagh shading a 4-3 decision.
One point was all that separated Aaron Harkin and John Sweeney also, Harkin holding off a spirited comeback from Sweeney in the third to earn a 10-9 verdict.
Cork’s Tommy Hyde staged a great comeback in the third round versus Martin Collins. Trailing 5-3 going into the frame, Hyde had it all to do. However, St Anne’s BC stand out Collins held his composure to earn a 6-5 win from a thrilling final frame.
Cousins Oliver McCarthy and Arthur McCarthy, who both box out of the Brian Dillon’s BC, recorded a brace of victories this evening.
Francie McDonagh and Conor Vint were tied at 2-2 going into the final round of the final contest of the session, but Vint found the target three times to earne a 5-3 decision over his talented opponent from a fine contest.
The Championships continue tomorrow with two sessions of semi-finals at 11am and 2pm. The weigh-in will be held between 8.30am and 10am.
The finals will be held Sunday, May 13th.
