Day 2 of National Junior Cadet Championships concluded at the National Stadium in Dublin today.
Cork enjoyed a good day at the office with Thomas McCarthy (Mayfield), Michael Keating (Watergrasshill), Shane O’Neill (St Colman’s) and Oliver McCarthy (Brian Dillon’s) all recording impressive quarter-final wins for Leeside at the National Junior Cadet Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium this morning.
Crumlin BC stand out Nathan May also advanced. May emerged with a 4-3 decision following a very close contest with talented Wexford BC prospect Ben Robinson.
Karl McKernon and John Nevin went all the way down to a countback, McKernon getting to nod on accepted scores following a 4-4 stalemate.
Belfast’s Conor Dempsey and Sean Corr denied Galway an all-Olympic BC decider in today’s 31kg semi-finals – both wins by one point margins.
Dempsey beat Martin Delaney 7-6 to set up Sunday’s final with Corr, who beat Edward Barrett 8-7.
The second 7-6 verdict of the day went to Calvin Turner following a thrilling contest with Francie Stokes.
Meanwhile, Conor Quinn edged out Limerick’s Roger O’Donoghue on countback following a 7-7 tie. Both boxers gave fine accounts of themselves in this clash, Quinn coming from behind versus the St Francis BC man to level just before the final bell.
Alan White, meantime, booked his ticket into the flyweight final with one of the biggest winning margins of the tournament.
White will meet Galway’s Ciaran Molloy, who outpointed Jordan Myres, tomorrow with the 52kg title up for grabs.
Jordan McDonagh and James Keenan were involved in a full-blooded affair at featherweight. Keenan, walking his opponent down for most the first two rounds, held a points advantage going into the third.
McDonagh whittled away that lead in the final two minutes. However, Keenan held his composure, and the lead, to claim victory by a one-point margin.
Christopher O’Reilly also made an impression this afternoon. The Bracken BC lightweight put in a fine three rounds work to set up Sunday’s 60kg final with Matthew Doherty.
Sunday’s finals begin at 11am. The weigh-in will be held between 8.30am and 10am.
The remaining finals of the 2012 Championships will be decided on May 18th.
