Conor Dempsey edged out a strong challenge from 3 Bridges BC dynamo Martin Stokes to emerge victorious from one of the opening bouts of today’s Boy 4 National Championships quarter-finals at Dublin’s National Stadium.
It was a touch and go heading down the final stretch of this clash, but Dempsey held a 7-6 advantage at the final bell.
Stephen McKenna, Jamie Conroy, Darren Hand, cousins and namesakes Martin Stokes and Martin Stokes, both of the Mulhuddart BC, Daniel Lindsey and Kalum McConville also booked their tickets into the last-four.
Emmett Mcllhatton and Luke O’Shea had to be separated on the first countback of the Championships.
Mcllhatton found the target with a superb right in the second, but O’Shea responded with an equally impressive left uppercut to open up a 4-3 lead going into the third. Mcllhatton shaded that frame to leave both boxers tied at 5-5, but it was O’Shea’s hand that was raised on accepted scores.
The Casey Berry versus Jason Sweeney was another top class contest, Berry showing some excellent counter punching skills, Sweeney constantly pouring forward. Berry landed a stunning right on the final bell to seal his win.
Cork’s Paddy McDonagh secured the first win of the tournament for the Rebel County in the 50Kg class, the Watergrasshill BC light-fly posting a narrow 7-6 decision over Matthew Shevlin.
Martin McDonagh and Conor Martin, who obliged his opponent to take a standing count off a flashing left in the second, were tied at 1-1 after the first and 3-3 after the second. However, Martin registered the only two points of the third to claim a 5-3 win.
Elsewhere in the 52 Kg class, Marco Evans, James Cleary and Conor Byrnes progressed. Josh Evan, meanwhile, edged out Daniel Nugent in the opening bout of the session.
The featherweight semi-finals will be contested between Aidan Walsh, the impressive Stephen Myres, never-say-die Michael McGrane and Dathi Glennon.
McGrane staged a spirited comeback to defeat Francis Donovan. Trailing 5-2 at the end of the first, the young Dubliner appeared to be looking at the exit sign. However, the Crumlin BC ace upped the tempo to reduce the deficit to 8-7 by the end of the second before taking the final round and victory.
Craig Bonney dominated on his way to victory in the only 60Kg contest of the session, while Limerick’s Anthony O’Donnell never looked back from opening up a 4-1 lead in the first round versus Dylan Carroll.
Cork’s Daniel Keating denied Limerick a second win in-a-row with victory over Shannonsiders Michael Doherty, while the Lewis Crocker versus Liam Dinan bout was stopped in favour of the of the hard-punching Belfast stand out in the second.
Justin Barrett, Paddy Joyce, with an inside the distance win, Padraig Malone and Matthew Bourke advanced from the final four bouts of the Boy 4 session.
Meantime, Johnny Doyle took the early route to victory in the opening contest of the Youth 1 quarter-finals. Colm Molloy also recorded an inside the distance win.
Emmett McGinn edged out Martin Ward and Piaras Casey had three points to spare over Adam Gill.
Jason McKay impressed on his way to a positive decision over Philip Bermingham, and Stephen Barrett, Gary Cully, Brendan Kennedy and Niall McClurkin, with a 13-7 verdict over Michael Devlin, all marched into the semi-finals.
They were joined in the last-four by Bernard McDonagh, Sean Garvey, Paddy Nolan, Michal McDonagh and Caoimhin Hynes.
Hynes chalked up the Holy Trinity BC’s second win of the session following a 19-11 decision over Tipperary’s Jack Connolly in a cracking lightweight contest between two Irish champions.
Shane O’Neill, Wayne Kelly and Mike O’Reilly finished first past the post this evening, while John Conroy took a 6-1 lead into the third round versus Dylan Ward en route to victory.
Paul Reid took a standing count in the first against Daryl Byrne, the Grangecon BC prospect finding the target with a big right. Byrne secured the opening frame 7-2 and was 11-5 up going into the final frame before emerging victorious.
European Junior bronze medalist Luke Thomas unleashed a formidable array of punches to stop John McDonagh in the first, McDonagh taking two standing counts.
Thomas’ win made it four-out-of-four for the Watergrasshill BC in Cork today. Tiernan Bird claimed a hard-fought 10-8 verdict over Caolan Lyttle from the other 66Kg decider.
Cole McGuinness and Charlie McDonagh made the 70Kg semi-finals on almost identical verdicts, McDonagh coming from behind to beat Gareth Small.
In the only middleweight contest of the evening, Michael Sweeney led from the front to make the semi-finals as did Shane Ward versus Pearce McDonagh. Michael Gallagher and Martin Collins also secured wins in the 80Kg class.
Ryan Daly held his composure – and the lead to beat Robert Gilmore in a hard-punching cruiserweight clash.
Daly was joined in the 86Kg mix by Niall Gallagher, who secured a narrow victory over Tony Stokes from the last bout of the session
