The following is a message from Jimmy Deenihan T.D.
“As you know, the catastrophic failure of the potato crop during the 1840′s was a transforming event in Ireland. The population of Ireland, which exceeded 8 million in the Census of 1841 was reduced by approximately 1.5 million through death and emigration by the time of the 1851 Census.
“I invite you to observe a minute of silent reflection at all sporting and public events taking place on Sunday, 13th May, in memory of all those who suffered loss during the Famine, – loss of life, loss of family, loss of home and loss of country. I would like to thank you sincerely for your support in this regard”
Jimmy Deenihan T.D.
Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht
