Nineteen bouts were completed at the Men’s U/23 and Female Youths Championships and Competition……………
Amy Broadhurst took the early route to victory against the brave challenge of Claire McDonagh in the opening bout of the Men’s U/23 and Women’s U/21 Championships and Female Youth Competition at Dublin’s National Stadium tonight.
Martin Wall, who shocked current European Elite champion Ray Moylette and AIBA World number 8 at the 2012 Elite Championships in January, also claimed victory, along with Jamie Kennedy, Barry O’Hara and Ronan Date – Wall and Date scoring first round stoppages.
Limerick’s Lee Reeves impressed in a 14-7 victory over Andrew McQuillan, and Belfast’s Barry O’Hara beat Dubliner Stephen Carroll.
Former European Youth champion Jason Quigley, who was one of the stars with the Los Angeles Matadors in the World Series of Boxing last season, also had his hand raised in victory, while Stephen Broadhurst followed in his sister’s footsteps with a 13-4 win over Conor Coyle.
Larry Fryers chalked up a second victory of the night for the Immaculata BC, but Dubliner Anthony Browne denied the Belfast club a hat-trick on an evening when the vast majority of the victors – leaving aside the edge-of-the-seat clash between Michael Reilly and Chris Blaney – advanced with plenty of daylight between them and their opponents.
Boxing resumes at 10.30am Saturday.
