<div><strong>Three-time Irish Elite champion Ross Hickey has acknowledged the task ahead of him at the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in Trabzon, Turkey in April.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Barring injury, Hickey, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool, will wear the Irish light-welterweight vest by the banks of the Black Sea.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>However, there is just one Olympic quota place left in the light-welterweight class, meaning that the stylish Grangecon BC ace will have absolutely no room for error and will have to claim gold.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>However, the Irish champion reckons he will be up to the task.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div>
<div><strong>"I have to win it, there is no second place. Winning is the only thing that I am thinking about now. I have to give it everything and I believe that I can do it," he told the Kildare nationalist.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Hickey, an Irish army private, &nbsp;was on familiar stomping ground&nbsp; when he took part in the recent Elite training camp at the Irish army base at the Curragh in Kildare.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>The intensive boot camp finished up last Friday and 25-year-old Hickey&nbsp;praised sports psychologist Gerry Hussey and the Irish army.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div>
<div><strong>"He (Gerry Hussey) &nbsp;gets our heads right for tournaments. He gets stuff going. He helps a lot, it gets me focused on what I want to do in the ring.</strong></div>
</div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div>
<div><strong>"There sessions a day, it's tough. After the morning run it would be either shadow boxing or sometimes we went down to the tank tracks doing army drills.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>"Normally though, it would be shadow boxing outside then back in for breakfast. It would be training again at 10.30am, maybe some weights or sprinting and then another session in the afternoon.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><span class="full-image-float-left ssNonEditable"><img src="http://www.iaba.ie/storage/Ross%20Hickey%20t.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1330025597458" alt="" /><span class="thumbnail-caption" style="width: 220px;">Ross Hickey (red) and Philip Sutcliffe</span></span></div>
<div><strong>"Some of the boys were asking about a few things that were going on and what was happening so I able to fill them in."</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>"They (the Irish army) gave me time to concentrate on my boxing and I'm very grateful for the support that they gave me."</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>The Irish champion also believes that&nbsp;retaining&nbsp;his Irish title in Olympic year was special.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div>
<div><strong>"You can't beat the first one, that is the one that gets you going and it's what you trained for. This was special though because I defended it. </strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>"I feel like a real champion after retaining the title. It's an Olympic year as well so it's the hardest title to win and as champion you are one that everybody is training to beat."</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div>&nbsp;
<div><strong>*AIBA confirmed recently that there had been an exchange of Olympic quota places between the European and Asian qualifiers. Likewise, there are now just four&nbsp;berths available in the light-flyweight class in the European qualifiers, down one&nbsp;place from five, and two places available in the middleweight class, up one place from one.</strong></div>
<div><strong></strong>&nbsp;</div>
<div><strong>However, the middleweight category will be of academic interest to Ireland in Trabzon as Darren O'Neill has already qualified for the XXX Olympiad in this category.*</strong></div>

<p><strong>IRISH head coach Billy Walsh has&nbsp;saluted the Irish army for their exceptional input into Ireland's training </strong><strong>camp at the Curragh in Kildare.</strong></p>
<div>
<div><strong>The Irish Elite men's and women's squad&nbsp;finished up their training camp at the Irish army base on Friday and will&nbsp; return to training at the National Stadium gym on Tuesday.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Part of the training r&eacute;gime at the Curragh involved grueling runs up the braveheart hills, where scenes from </strong><strong>the hit movie Braveheart featuring Mel Gibson were filmed.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>The squad will depart for a training camp in Germany on February 28th and will also take part in the Chemistry Cup Multi-Nations &nbsp;in Halle, Germany from March 13th-18th.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Ireland will&nbsp;then&nbsp;have a tapering off&nbsp;training camp in the Ukraine before the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in Trabzon, Turkey from April 13th-22nd.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><span class="full-image-float-right ssNonEditable"><span><img style="width: 350px;" src="http://www.iaba.ie/storage/Billy%20Walsh%20w.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1329668998187" alt="" /></span><span class="thumbnail-caption" style="width: 350px;">Irish head coach Billy Walsh</span></span></div>
<div><strong>"The army bent over backwards to facilitate us and have really looked after us, said Billy Walsh.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>"It was fantastic and we can't give enough credit to the army for the way they treated us and looked after us. Their input into our training program was exceptional and we really appreciated it."</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Barring injury, Paddy Barnes, Mike McDonagh, Ross Hickey, Adam Nolan, Joe&nbsp;Ward,&nbsp;Tommy McCarthy and Con Sheehan will&nbsp;line out for Ireland&nbsp;at the&nbsp; Olympic qualifiers in Trabzon.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Darren O'Neill, John Joe Nevin and Michael Conlan have already qualified for the Olympics.</strong></div>

<div>
<div><strong>The Irish 2012 Olympian cruised to a unanimous (50-45,50-45,50-45) decision over Rashid Kassem&nbsp;at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in the French capital.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>The win was Nevin's second victory this season over the Danish fighter, and ensures that United, who claimed the inaugural WSB Team Championships last term, </strong><strong>qualify for the WSB quarter-finals play-offs from Group B.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>However, following tonight's defeat, the Leopard's destiny is no longer in their own hands and they are looking nervously over their shoulders at David Oliver Joyce's Istanbul Bosphorus.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Joyce's side&nbsp;meet the Beijing Dragons - who are rooted to the bottom of the table -&nbsp;on Wednesday night and if they win they will leapfrog the Leopards into fourth spot in </strong><strong>Group B, a finish which will guarantee that the Turkish outfit&nbsp;make the play-off's at the expense of the German side.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Neither Ken Egan, who has a hand injury, or&nbsp; Irish Elite super-heavyweight champion&nbsp;Con Sheehan were in action for the Leopards last night.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>

<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>But&nbsp;Jason Quigley's and Sean Turner's Los Angeles Matadors are out following their &nbsp;3-2&nbsp; loss to the Bangkok Elephants.</strong></div>
<div><strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>
<div><strong>Tyrone's Michael Gallagher, who claimed&nbsp;the 2011 AIBA World referee and judge (R&amp;) award, was working as an R&amp;J at&nbsp; tonight's&nbsp;United versus Leopards match.</strong></div>

<div><strong>Two-time Irish Olympian Nevin was the only Irish boxer in action in the WSB tonight.</strong></div>
