The IABA have confirmed their squad for the 2012 European Schoolboy Championships in Russia……
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have confirmed their 18-strong squad for the 10th European Schoolboy Championships.
The 2012 Championships officially begin in the Black Sea holiday resort of Anapa, Russia on October 1st.
Cork’s Oliver McCarthy and Antrim’s James McGivern will be appearing in successive tournaments as the Munster and Ulster stand outs represented Ireland at the 2011 European Schoolboy Championships in Grozny, Russia.
McCarthy, boxing at 40kg in Grozny, beat Alexandr Berdnik of Belarus in his opening bout but then lost out to eventual gold medalist, Sulyeman Bammatov of Russia, in the quaarter-finals.
McGivern, competing at 41.5kg, was beaten by Vadim Vinichenko (Belarus), who claimed bronze.
The squad have been preparing at the National Stadium in Dublin for the Continental deciders and Irish team manager Paddy Gallagher is quietly confident.
“Oliver McCarthy and James McGivern were both at the last European Schoolboy Championships and that experience will obviously stand to them and it will help the rest of the squad also, he said.
“The team are preparing well for Russia. It will be very competitive in Anapa, the European Schoolboy Championships always are, but we have a talented young squad and they are all very much looking forward to this tournament.”
Ireland’s boxers have won 40 medals at European Schoolboy Championships level since the inaugural tournament in Rome in 2003.
This is the second time that the Championships will be held in Anapa. At the 2009 edition in the Russian city, Victor Medveduic and Gerard Whitehouse claimed two bronze medals for Ireland.
