The Irish Amateur Boxing Association, in association with the Ballina BC, have name a talented young squad for this weekend’s meeting with Wales in Mayo.

Both countries meet on Saturday night in a 14-bout Schoolboy/Youth international at the Downhill House Hotel in Ballina.

Five Mayo boxers, Martin McDonagh, Aaron Daley, Jamie Conroy, Colm Quinn and Martin Collins, have been named on the Irish panel.

Saturday’s international coincides with the recent opening of the Ballina Boxing Club’s $50,000 Training and Fitness Centre.

The Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, officially opened the impressive new facility, which is named after and dedicated to Mayo boxing legend Dick Hearns.

Hearns, who worked as a Garda, won numerous Irish titles boxing out of the Ballina BC. One of the founding members of the club in 1927, he beat Roger Michelot of France in 1935.

Twelve months later Michelot won gold at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Ireland did not send a team to the Berlin Olympiad.

Hearns was also crowned European Police light-heavyweight champion in 1935.

Ballina BC Treasurer Joe Lavelle said that they were eagerly looking forward to Saturday’s international with Wales.

“This will be the first international at this level between Ireland and Wales in Mayo and it promises to be a fantastic occasion. Everyone is looking forward to what will be a great night’s boxing,” he said.

Dinner will be served before Saturday’s international at 6.30pm. Boxing begins at 7.30pm.

A number of tickets are still available from the Downhill House Hotel (Phone (069) 21033).

The award winning Downhill House Hotel are kindly sponsoring Saturday’s international.
