Europe consolidated its status as the top amateur boxing Continent after claiming 27 of the 52 medals available at the 2012 Olympics Games.

Seven gold, seven silver and 13 bronze medals were won by Europe at London 2012.

Asia secured 16 medals, while the Americas – broke up between Cuba, who, like Ireland, won four medals, the USA and Brazil – took home 9 medals.

286 boxers qualified for the 30th Olympiad from a qualfying series employing a Continental quota system.

Ireland’s Katie Taylor, John Joe Nevin, Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals – or just over 14% of the total medal haul for Europe’s pugilists.

Showjumper Cian O’Connor also medaled (bronze) for Ireland at London 2012.

Great Britain, Ukraine, Russia, Cuba and Ireland, in that order, finished in the top five positions in the medals table in boxing at the XXX Olympiad.

Taylor won the Best Female Boxer of the Games Award and Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan was presented with the Best Male Boxer of the Games Award.

Lightweight Evaldas Petrauskas won a first ever Olympic medal (bronze) for Lithuania in boxing in London.

Tajikistan’s Mavzuna Chorieva, who was beaten by Taylor in the lightweight semi-final, secured a first ever Olympic medal (bronze) for her country in boxing at the 2012 Games.

Boxing has now secured 16 of Ireland’s 28 medals since the Paris 1924 Games, an Olympiad which marked the first occasion that Ireland competed at the Olympics independently.
