Ireland’s prospects recorded an 8-4 win over Scotland at the Everglades Hotel in Derry last night.
Ireland beat Scotland side 8-4 at a sold-out Youth and Cadet international meeting at the Everglades Hotel in Derry last night.
Leigh Moran, Chris Nevin, David Roche and Thomas Carthy claimed victories in a very competitive Youth clash which finished level at 4-4.
Ireland’s Cadets beat their Scottish counterparts 4-0 courtesy of wins for Tom Stokes, Francie Stokes, Brett McGinty and Tiernan Bradley.
The Ryan Green versus Jack Crawford contest was an exhibition, while the Joe Fitzpatrick versus Connor McGregor 56kg meeting was off.
There was little between the sides at Youth level, with six of the bouts being decided by one, two and three point margins.
Three of these narrow victories went to Ireland, while Scotland’s Sam Ball and Grant Quigley edged out Hugh Nevin and Michael Stokes.
Sunday’s IABA hosted international was held in conjunction with the Oak Leaf Boxing club in Derry.
IABA President Tommy Murphy, National Registrar Stephen Connolly, Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke, and Irish Youth coach Billy McClean were in attendance.
“We saw some fine performances from our kids last night against a very good Scottish side. It was great workout and it gives us the opportunity to see where they are at this point, heading forward, said Tommy Murphy.
“We’re working toward the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. That’s what it is all about and we hope to run more of these internationals in the future and to use these internationals as stepping stones for our young boxers.
“Congratulations to the Oak Leaf boxing club on running a wonderful, well organised international. There was a fantastic atmosphere at the venue and it was a tremendous occasion.”
The Irish Youth side are preparing for the 2012 AIBA World Youth Championships in Armenia in November and December.
