IRELAND BEAT ENGLAND IN CORK

Ireland’s juniors recorded a fine win over a talented England side on Leeside on Saturday night…

Ireland’s young boxers handed themselves a perfect confidence booster ahead of next month’s European Junior Championships in Bulgaria with a win over England on a Watergrasshill BC hosted international in Cork last night.

The Boys in Green, who were boxing out of the red corner, recorded a 13-6 victory over a strong looking English side at the Rochestown Park Hotel on Leeside.

Brendan Irvine and Willie Donoghue fired Ireland into a 2-0 lead, followed by wins for Josie McDonagh, Kalum McConville, James Cleary and John Joyce.

Wayne Kelly was also in top form, while Daryl Byrne emereged victorious from a cracking contest with Reuben Arrowsmith, the Grangecon ace winning on a countback.

Danny Keating, Lewis Crocker, Irish captain Luke Thomas, Brian Wall and Aaron Kelly also had their hands raised in victory on the night.

Irish coach Billy McClean is prearing his squad for next month’s European Junior Championships in Bulgaria.

The Continental deciders glove off in Sofia on June 22.

The Watergrasshill BC in Cork, which hosted the recent win over Scotland at the Riverstown Park Hotel, was the host club for Saturday’s international, which was organised by the IABA and the Cork County Board.

“It was a tremendous night of boxing between two very talented young sides in Cork,  ” said IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke.
