EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 4

by Bernard O'Neill on Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Wayne Kelly, Lewis Crocker and Brian Wall recorded wins at the 16th European Junior Championships.

Brian Wall completed an Ireland hat-trick at the 16th European Junior Championships in Bulgaria yesterday.

The Cashen Vale BC middleweight beat Romania’s Leonard Nicolae to ensure that Ireland will have six boxers competing in today’s quarter-finals at the 35-nation tournament.

Earlier yesterday, Wayne Kelly and Lewis Crocker advanced to the last-eight following two magnificent wins.

Kelly booked his ticket into the last-eight after recording a 15-8 decision over Germany’s Johanathan Zumbe in the lightweight class in Sofia.

And Crocker followed that up with a 14-8 verdict over Ogulcan Albayrak of Turkey.

Wall, Kelly and Crocker join their compatriots , Jason McKay, Darren Pollock and Kalum McConville, in Wednesday’s quarter-finals.

All six are now just one win away from claiming at least a bronze medal apiece in the Bulgarian capital.

Speaking after today’s wins, Irish team manager Michael Darby hailed the performances of the Irish trio.

He said: “Wayne, Lewis and Brian boxed out of their skins today and all three gave it absolutely everything in the ring and we’re delighted with their performances.

“We now have six through to the quarter-finals and it’s going to be another big day for Irish boxing on Wednesday.”
