Four bouts were decided on countbacks in today’s Boy 3 semi-finals at Dublin’s National Stadium.
Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for Conor Dempsey and Darren Barnwell after they bothbowed out to Conor Jordan and Ryan O’Donoghue on countbacks in this morning’s 31kg and 39kg Boy 3 semi-finals following 4-4 and 12-12 ties at the NationalStadium.
A solitary point was all that divided Jordan and Dempsey, while 36-32 was the accepted score margin from the O’Donoghue v Barnwell clash.
Cork’s Oliver McCarthy made a big impression in his win over John Maughan to progress to a 42Kg showdown with St John Bosco ace Ryan Lavery, who beat Shane Bolger this morning.
Martin Delaney, John Stokes, Ben Robinson, Francie Stokes, Michael McDonagh, Eugene McKeever, Andrew Connolly and James McGivern also won at the 10am session.
Connolly, who has been having a fine tournament, registered a 11-4 decision over Declan Raffery, while the talented John Stokes beat Daniel O’Donnell 9-6.
Two semi-finals were won on one point margins, Dublin’s Jordan Hutch and Cork’s Thomas McCarthy setting up Saturday’s 33kg decider with 10-9 and 3-2 wins over Terry McEntee and Hugh Nevin.
Meanwhile, Cork experienced mixed fortunes in this afternoon’s session of Boy 3 semi-finals with Arthur McCarthy losing out to Aaron Harkin of Donegal and James Keenan – who will face Clann Naofa ace James McDonagh in Saturday’s final – posting a 9-7 decision over Patrick McDonnell in the 54kg class.
The featherweight three-rounders went the way of Colm Quinn and Brett McGinty, the latter earning a hard-fought win over Darragh Murray.
Christopher O’Reilly, Kevin Kehoe, courtesy of a countback, Cathal Griffin, Conor Vint, George Bodor and Sean Devril also had their hands raised in victory.
Nevan Fannon and Patrick Cawley won out in the 70kg last-four duels, Fannon beating Enda Callaghan 8-3, while Marcus Browley and Jodie Mitchell progressed from their middleweight encounters with Leroy Haughney and Ryan Devine, Mitchell advancing on a razor thin countback verdict over Devine following a high-scoring 75kg bout.
Stephen Bonner and James Clarke will clash in Saturday’s 80kg final. Bonner beat Limerick’s Michael O’Dwyer in this afternoon’s penultimate semi-final and Clarke brought the curtain down on the last-four stage of the Championships with an impressive win over Martin Mongan.
