The quarter-finals of the National Intermediate Championships are underway at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Myles Casey, with brothers Ken and Jimmy Moore working his corner, got proceedings underway at the National Intermediate Championships this morning with an impressive 18-6 victory over Paul McGrath in the bantamweight class.

The St Francis BC southpaw, persistently taking the fight to his opponent, was the dominant force throughout this three-rounder and took each frame 6-2 to book his ticket into the semi-finals.

Patrick Cawley also impressed at the National Stadium, the Dubliner taking a six-point lead into the third versus James McDonagh. The Dockers BC welterweight threw everything at his opponent in the final three minutes but Cawley was never going to be denied.

Aaron McGrane, meantime, dropped home some excellent lefts in the second round against Barry O’Toole. O’Toole’s two-shot combinations reduced the deficit in the third, but McGrane found the target with a neat combo of his own in the final few seconds to seal victory.

Cork southpaw Noel Murphy, showing admirable composure in the face of Stephen Carroll’s constant aggression, secured the first 3-1 and also held a two-point advantage at the bell for the end of the second.

Carroll made an explosive start to the third, but Murphy kept picking up points on the counter on his way into the last-four. Martin Wall produced a big second round to put some serious daylight (20-13) between himself and Stephen Gilroy after the first finished tied at 8-8.

Gilroy whittled away at Wall’s advantage in the third, picking up nine points, but Wall responded with a seven-point salvo of his own to claim victory from a fine contest which yielded 49-points.

In the first of the 71kg duels, Brian Walsh took every round versus Stephen Flynn and Kieran Forde signaled his intentions with a hard-fought decision over Conor Flanagan.

Emmet Brennan and Peter Ursu won impressively, while Paul Kelly earned a 13-7 verdict over Conor Doherty. The Holy Trinity BC bounced back from that reversal courtesy of Taylor McGoldrick’s win over Joe Hart. However, it was a tight one, as Hart, who dropped the first round 5-2, fought his way back into this contest before McGoldrick took a 9-7 decision.

Michael Reilly saw off the challenge of Paul McMullen from a contest which yielded no scores in the second round, while 2011 European Youth bronze medallist Stephen Broadhurst had too much firepower for David Becevas, who, to his credit never stopped going forward in the final bout of the session.

Sean McGlinchey (red) v Derek Duhig

The Ballinacarrow BC experienced mixed fortunes in the opening three bouts of the afternoon session, with Eamonn Tighe and Liam Green advancing but Eamonn Walsh bowing out.

Sean McGlinchey was in top form against against St Francis BC light-heavyweight Derek Duhig, followed by wins for Stephen O’Sullivan, Phelim Halligan, Cillian Myles, Thomas Carthy and Stephen Stokes.

Paul Byrne took the early route to victory versus Lorcan McGahan, the Drogheda heavyweight registering the first KO of the Championships.

Byrne was joined in the last-four by Gary Sweeney, who impressed en route to victory over Damien O’Sullivan.

The tightest contest of the weekend was in the super-heavyweight class, James Leahy progressing with one-point advantage over Chris Griffin.

Jason Barrows, Dean Gardiner and Paul Courtney also advanced in the 91kg+ class.

John Cassidy beat his own Illies GG team-mate Leigh Moran to advance to the semi-finals of the National Intermediate Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium tonight.

Cassidy emerged with a hard-fought 11-8 decision from the all Donegal 48kg clash.

Meanwhile, Sean Higginson will fancy his chances of going all the way at the home of Irish boxing. The St John Bosco BC stand out produced an impressive performance to convincingly beat Ian Fleming this evening.

Ryan Peake, Carl McDonald, Gary McKenna, John Nevin and Joel Scullion also progressed, while Graham Keating had seven points to spare over Jason Kirwan.

The lightweight duels went the way of Jason Conroy, Patrick Nevin, Martin Noonan and Dean Walsh, who was involved in a 49-point three-rounder with Sean Flynn.

Noonan staged one of the comebacks of the year last weekend, but there were no outstanding third round reversal of fortune tonight as the Leesider posted a less dramatic 14-10 victory over Orin McDermot.

Paul McArdle, Sean Magee and Sean Duffy booked their tickets into the last-four in the final three bouts of the session.

“It was a brilliant performance by Amy to win gold in Poland. It was always going to be a tough final against the Russian girl and I’m delighted for her, said the World number one.

“The win will be a great boost to women’s boxing in Ireland as Amy has proved that we can go into these competitions and beat the best.”

Caoilinn McCormack also lost to an eventual gold medallist, Russia’s Adelina Zarubina, in the last-eight.

Amy Broadhurst was crowned European Junior featherweight champion following an edge-of-the-seat win over Russia’s Svetlana Khilchenko in Poland today.

The Dundalk southpaw (Dealgan BC) was trailing by one point going into the third and final round but turned it around to finish on top of the 57kg podium following a 16-15 win in Wladyslawowo.

Broadhurst is now the only Irish female boxer – besides World number one Katie Taylor – to win gold in European competition.

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2012/1110/1224326410971.html – by IABA web

Broadhurst, whose brother Stephen and Paul have won bronze medals at European Schoolboy and Youth level, and Khilchenko, an orthodox puncher, shared the frist round 5-5, the Russian doing good work on the inside, Broadhurst winging home some big lefts.

Khilchenko upped the pace in the second and started getting inside Broadhurst’s guard to pick up points, but Broadhurst, roared on by the Irish squad at ringside, held her ground and continued to pick off her shots with her left and also managed to find the target with a solid right close to the bell.

The Russian champion edged that frame and held a one-point advantage going into the third and final stanza. However, Broadhurst, upping her work rate, secured that round by a two-point margin to seal what Irish team manager Maura Campbell described as a brilliant victory.

“It was a fantastic victory and performance. The win is another great boost for women’s boxing in Ireland. It was a tough final and it was very close, but Amy performed magnificently,” said IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke from Poland.

Broadhurst is trained by her dad Tony, Jim O’Connor and Anto Donnelly at the Dealgan BC – who now have the distinction of having won three European medals by three members of the same family.

Commentating after today’s win, Anto Donnelly said that it was another proud moment for the club.

“We’re absolutely delighted with the victory and it was a great performance by Amy. It is fantastic to have three European medals won by boxers in our club. Amy gave it everything and she totally deserved her win,” he said.

Sally Carrig and Niamh Folan claimed bronze for Ireland at the 20-nation tournament. The Irish squad are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 1pm tomorrow evening (Saturday, November 10th).

John McCormack and Damien Walsh were working Ireland’s corner in Poland.
