BALLINACARROW BC GET THE RUB OF THE GREENE

by Bernard O'Neill on Saturday, October 20th, 2012

The Men’s U/23 and Women’s C’ships and Female Youth Competition continued in Dublin today.

Saidhbh and Liam Green

History was created at the National Stadium in Dublin today.

For the first time in the 101-year history of the IABA two sets of brothers and sisters represented their clubs at the home of Irish boxing.

Amy and Stephen Broadhurst (Dealgan) and Saidhbh and Liam Greene (Ballincarrow) were between the ropes in the Female Youth Competition and Men’s U/23 Championships at IABA HQ.

Three of the siblings won, with Amy, Saidhbh and Liam having their hands raised in victory, but Stephen bowing out to Eddie Byrne in the middleweight class.

Two contests were decided on dreaded countbacks – the first of the tournament – today, Liam Green and Sean McGlinchy progressing on accepted score at the expense of Ciaran O’Griofa and Patrick Ward.

Two-time Elite finalist and WSB middleweight Jason Quigley claimed his second victory in 24-hours this afternoon, and Kayleigh Murrihy advanced after a 12-7 verdict over Niamh Ball in a keenly contested Women’s U/21 lightweight clash.

Boxing resumes next Friday.
